Leonardo Passeri leads the way: art celebrates sport and inclusion in Umbria’s first Cammini Camaldolesi Umbri Tournament

In the heart of Umbria, the central Italian region known for its landscapes and spirituality, the small town of Costacciaro becomes the stage for an event that brings together sport, inclusion, culture, and art.

The 1° football tournament FIGC – DCPS, held in conjunction with the 1° Trofeo Cammini Camaldolesi Umbri, is far more than just a football competition—it is a celebration of human values and community spirit.

At the center of this initiative stands Leonardo Passeri, a visual artist native to Umbria, who has given a unique creative voice to the tournament through his original artwork “Stadio Interiore” (2025). This 90×120 cm acrylic on wood panel features one of Passeri’s iconic stylized figures—armless and legless—designed to shift the focus from physical form to inner energy. “In its apparent immobility,” says Passeri, “this figure expresses movement, intensity, and interior strength. The absence of limbs symbolizes willpower and resilience.”

The figure, imagined as a futuristic being, is adorned with details reminiscent of ancient fabrics, creating a striking interplay between tradition and innovation. The fractured lines and fragmented motion evoke the real-time dynamism of a football match. To accompany the main painting, Passeri also created four hand-painted statuettes, inspired by the same symbolic form and given to each of the participating teams as trophies—blending visual identity with emotional significance.

The tournament features four teams: A.S.D. Pontevecchio, U.S.D. Superga 48 Spoleto, A.S.D. Ellera Calcio, and A.P.D. Anthropos Civitanova Marche, who will compete on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June on the football field of Costacciaro, in an atmosphere rooted in respect, friendship, and participation.

The event is further enriched by a diverse cultural program. On Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., there will be a meeting with former legends of Perugia Calcio; on Sunday at 10:15 a.m., a Holy Mass will be celebrated at the Chiesa di San Francesco di Costacciaro. At 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, a special performance will be held for children and organizers by Giulio Mogol, of legendary Italian lyricist of Lucio Battisti.

The event will take place at the Associazione Tra Montana hostel, and is organized under the coordination of Emanuele Luchetti, President of A.S.D. Cammini Camaldolesi Umbri. A highlight of the closing ceremony will be the presentation of the artwork “Stadio Interiore” to Armando Marcucci, Regional Delegate of FIGC – DCPS, in recognition of his tireless efforts in promoting sport as a tool for inclusion.

Also contributing to the opening of the tournament are institutional greetings from Stefania Proietti, President of the Regione Umbria; Andrea Capponi, Mayor of Costacciaro; Natale Vergari of the Università degli Uomini Originari di Costacciaro; and Raffaele Capponi of the Associazione Tra Montana – Guide degli Appennini. Other speakers include Don Cesare Bovinelli (Centro Studi Avellaniti), who will speak on Benedictine hospitality, and Vincenzo Silvestrelli, President of Eticamente, who will present the origins and future of the Cammino VSR.

“I believe deeply in the ability of both art and sport to connect people, break down barriers, and tell powerful stories,” says Passeri, who is committed to creating a new work of art each year for future editions. This vision aims to transform the tournament into not just a sporting tradition, but also a growing cultural and emotional legacy.

As Umbria’s hills watch quietly over the field, a new tradition begins—where football, inclusion, and creativity come together under one shared sky.

Costacciaro

Costacciaro is a special place to host this first football event, destined to grow into something great. With its rich history, breathtaking natural surroundings, and strong community spirit, this charming village offers the perfect setting to kick off a new tradition that combines sport, culture, and passion.

Nestled within the Monte Cucco Regional Park, Costacciaro brings together authenticity and beauty, creating an inspiring atmosphere where young talent, families, and fans can come together and celebrate the values of the game. Its welcoming character, combined with the enthusiasm of the local community, makes it the ideal starting point for an event that aspires to become a landmark in the regional-and one day national-football scene.

Costacciaro is a medieval hill town located along the ancient Via Flaminia, on the slopes of Monte Cucco in Umbria. Originally a strategic castle acquired by the city of Gubbio in the 13th century, it was later fortified by the Dukes of Urbino, especially under Federico II, who commissioned the distinctive Rivellino bastion. The village preserves several historical landmarks, including the Romanesque Church of San Francesco, medieval towers, and a 17th-century olive oil mill. With strong cultural ties to Gubbio, Costacciaro remains a quiet, well-preserved village surrounded by nature.

Set within the Monte Cucco Regional Park, a protected area known for its karst caves, pristine forests, and diverse wildlife, Costacciaro is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as caving, gliding, trekking, and mountain biking. Visitors can explore the Monte Cucco Cave along a 750-meter underground trail, or learn about the area’s geology and ecosystems at the local Museum of Karst Areas. With around 1,300 residents, the village offers essential services, accommodations, and a peaceful lifestyle closely connected to the natural environment.
